Grid Lines:

Turning the grid lines on is useful for narrowing down an enemy ship's point of origin. The ship's starting coordinates (ie. A5, D3) are given to the left of the ship on the warp path, and with the grid lines on you can see which planets are in that sector. By noting how far along the warp path an enemy ship has gone, you can guess where it might be headed and prepare accordingly. Once you have researched the warp scanner, however, you will have a much better idea where enemy ships are headed.
